Eastern Kentucky has had two devastating floods in just three years. Combined, the floods have claimed nearly 70 lives. With weather-related disasters occurring more and more frequently, we know that low-income people in impoverished places, like Eastern Kentucky, are most vulnerable. That’s because low-income families in our community most often live on low-lying land near rivers or in mountain hollows, where land is typically close to creeks and streams, or on land beneath unstable hillsides. It is urgent that we get people to higher ground by building new homes they can afford on land that will never flood! It’s also urgent that we affordably rehabilitate homes owned by low-income people so that they are flood resilient. But to do this, we need your help!
From mudslides to floods, one extreme weather-related disaster after another has pounded Eastern Kentucky over the last 5 years. While we don’t yet know the reasons behind why these disasters have hit us so particularly hard, researchers at the University of Kentucky believe higher amounts of rain and snow are overwhelming our region’s thin soil type, which is largely the result of decades of strip mining. With most of our population living in modest homes in low-lying areas unprotected from flooding, the challenge we face is getting people, who often can’t afford to live anywhere else, out of harm’s way.
The low-income individuals and families, including flood-surviving households, helped by you through HDA are not given new homes. Instead, we work with them on a case-by-case basis to build them a home they can afford – one that stays within their budget and mortgage limits and meets their needs. Each individual and family served is prepared for homeownership by our Housing Counselor, provide up to 150 hours of sweat equity in the building of their own homes, and are deeply grateful and appreciative of your donations.
Low-income homeowners receiving affordable repairs and home rehabilitations are also greatly helped by you and are equally grateful to have their homes made better, safer, and much healthier places to live.
We believe ending generational poverty in Eastern Kentucky is made possible by building and selling homes low-income families can afford. By being able to afford their home, low-income people build wealth, which can transform their lives and their family’s future. We also believe that improving existing homes owned by low-income people with home repairs they can afford helps create a brighter future for them and our community.
